Idina Menzel in Rent
Make-up by Debra Coleman

In Rent, the Broadway musical turned motion picture, Idina Menzel's character Maureen is a manipulative, flirtatious performance artist. "Even thought the look of the movie was a natural one, we decided Maureen was perhaps the type of young woman who never went anywhere without her 'face on' — onstage or off," said make-up artist Debra Coleman. The place is New York City, the time is Christmas 1989. In this scene, it is the evening of Maureen's protest concert against the demolition of a homeless enclave. There is a riot, so she and the other Bohemians escape to a cafe. Here is Maureen's look for the big number, La Vie Boheme.
Skin care: Sonia Dakar cleanser and moisturizer
Foundation: No base was used. "Idina has a lovely, creamy complexion," said Coleman. She spot-checked any unevenness with concealer or Derma Color mixed with moisturizer.
Concealer: I Nuovi Perfector #4Y. Not much was needed.
Powder: Dermablend No-Color compact, dusted all over
Cheeks: Stila Creme Blush in Camellia or Peony and Stila Sport Color Push-Up in Blush Flash
Eye shadow: Vincent Longo Trio in Untitled #3
Eye liner: MAC black cream liner. Although it's hard to see in this photo, Coleman used a wet, bright turquoise eye shadow from Lancome's Calypso palette, layered over the black liner to create a "fish scale" teal tone.
Brows: Minimal fill-in with MAC pencil in Spiked
Mascara: Max Factor black, volumizing, waterproof
Lips: A mix of Shu Uemura, MAC and Lancome lipsticks
Working with this face: Menzel's cheekbones, brows, eyes and lips "were dramatic enough in their own context and lent themselves well to her character's look," Coleman said.
