Gretchen Mol on
The Notorious Bettie Page
Nicki Ledermann had the task of turning actress Gretchen Mol into iconic pin-up girl Bettie Page. This means she was not only doing a likeness make-up, but also recreating a much-admired beauty make-up. Page’s distinctive, radiant look made her the most famous pin-up of the 1950s. A series of bondage photos caused a scandal, and Page eventually left the New York modeling world in 1957. There was a resurgence of interest in her in the late 1970s, and her photos continue to inspire collectors and immitators. This photo is from the new film The Notorious Bettie Page, which looks at her life. Here is the make-up Ledermann used.
Skin care: Shu Uemura rosewater toner, Epicuren Step 6 moisturizer, La Mer body lotion.
Foundation: Uslu Airlines
airbrush foundation applied with an Uslu Airlines airbrush.
Shading: Bobbi Brown Taupe blush to enhance cheekbones, chin.
Concealer: Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage under the foundation.
Powder: MAC Blot Powder in Medium Dark.
Cheeks: Armani Sheer Blush #2 mixed with MAC Pinch’a’cheek.
Eye shadow: Stila in Shell all over lid and Bobbi Brown’s Taupe in crease to lift lid.
Eye liner: Bobbi Brown eyeliner gel in Black.
Brows: Bliss pencil in Brown.
Mascara: Kevyn Aucoin volumizing mascara in Black.
Lips: Shiseido lipstick in Red #10 with matching Shiseido lip pencil.
Working with this face: “Gretchen couldn’t be any more different from Bettie Page. She is fair skinned with freckles, and her features are rounder, so rather than trying to match features I concentrated on getting the feel of her style by emphasizing eyebrows and lips and the simple 1950s eye make-up. The challenge was to do a make-up that works for color as well as black and white film stock.”
